General Objectives
To train competent mid-cadre technicians (basic technician Certificate level) based on rigorous practical training who will perform basic activities in the field of Petroleum Geology.
Specific Objectives
The Specific Objectives of the programme will be to ensure that upon completion of the NTAL 4 programme technicians are expected to be able to:
- Comprehend and describe the basic petroleum geology and exploration definitions, terms and terminologies;
- Recognize, organize and operate simple field petroleum (oil and gas) exploration tools and equipment in initial exploration (geological, seismic, gravity, and other methods related to oil and gas exploration) and in drilling exploration (drilling, borehole logging, and related methods in oil and gas exploration);
- Operate simple laboratory equipment and tools used in oil and gas exploration;
- Prepare core samples and other field samples for analysis; and
- Write basic or simple technical reports to the supervisor on routine field and laboratory work
Admission Requirements
An applicant must have at least four (4) D passes from Certificate of Secondary Education Examination by NECTA in non-religious subjects. Out of four (4) passes, two (2) must be from science subjects (Physics, Engineering science, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Geography).. OR Holders of NVTA Level 3 in Engineering aligned subjects from VETA Registered Institutions can also apply.

- Comprehend and describe the fundamentals of mineral exploration, geology and mining geology definitions, terms and nomenclature;
- Identify, organize and operate simple tools and equipment used in mineral exploration (geological, geochemical, geochemical and other methods) related to mineral exploration and mining geology; and drilling exploration (drilling and borehole logging) and related methods in mineral exploration and mining geology.
- Assist in field geological and geochemical sampling, and geophysical data acquisition in mineral exploration and mine development.

- Operate field geological, electrical, and seismic and gravity tools and equipment related to oil and gas exploration and drilling.
- Prepare samples and undertake simple field and laboratory analysis and tests of geological (rocks, minerals, sediments and fossils) and geochemical samples;
- Apply remote sensing data and GIS to digitize and prepare maps in petroleum exploration.
- Prepare basic technical reports for geological, geochemical and geophysical field activities in oil and gas well drilling and logging activities in oil and gas exploration
- Undertake basic geological, geochemical and geophysical field camp management.

Specific Objectives
The Specific Objectives of the programme will be to provide that upon completion of the NTAL 6 programme technicians are expected to be able to:
- Describe basic components of geological, geochemical and geophysical methods and perform (without supervision) geological and geochemical sampling, and geophysical data acquisition in oil and gas exploration and development;
- Support and assist experts in project designs, establish logical framework for project planning, implantation and monitoring in oil and gas exploration and development;
- Undertake field and laboratory analysis and tests of geological (rocks, sediments and fossils) and geochemical samples;
- Prepare basic reports for geological, geochemical and geophysical field activities in oil and gas; well drilling and logging activities in oil and gas exploration and development for the supervisor;
- Describe and analyse policy, statutes, and related documents in the oil and gas industry in Tanzania; and
- Supervise geological, geochemical and geophysical field operations and drilling rig camp management.
